A new consumer-facing guide from sports nutrition industry trade group ESSNA sets out to explains the importance of nutrition and the value of supplementation, how to time nutritional intake within exercise routines, what kind of nutrients the body needs before, during and after you exercise and what people should keep in mind when making product selections.

This guide is being released was part of a series of consumer-facing projects that ESSNA is driving forward to keep active people consuming sports nutrition products effectively and confidently. The organisation says its efforts have been redoubled in light of Covid-19 having witnessed an increase in people turning to the internet and as a result, an increase in the spread of misinformation online.

ESSNA chair, Adam Carey, said: “This guide will support active people across Europe of all ages and backgrounds to get the most out of their exercise. Whether you’re working out at home, running outside or in a professional sportsperson training once again, this guide will help you to support your body through sports nutrition. This guide provides key information on many sports categories, including what is the best time to intake proteins, carbohydrates, fats, caffeine and much more. It’s a must read for all active people. ESSNA is committed to supporting the safety of consumers and our guides such as this one have been created to help us fulfil that commitment.

“ESSNA’s priority is, of course, the safety of its consumers and we intend the advice presented in this guide to be taken in relation to the restrictions imposed by each European country. We urge everyone to ensure they abide by government advice and minimise contact as much as possible. In addition, as always ESSNA’s advice to consumers who have specific nutritional needs or those are unsure about what is best for them is to consider talking to a performance nutritionist or to a trainer.”

The ESSNA website hosts its home-based sports nutrition guide and as well as other resources such as our ABCs of sports nutrition, Watch Your Protein guide, Dos and Don’ts of sports nutrition and our home based sports nutrition guide. This material is designed to assist by outlining the most effective and safe ways to stay fit and healthy, written by a wide range of experts from the sports nutrition sector.
