IFOAM publicizes events in several European countries for Organic Farming Day, and calls on more countries to organize more events
The European Parliament , the Council of Europe and the European Commission signed a joint declaration last year proclaiming September 23 as the Day of Organic Farming in the European Union . The proclamation is part of the action plan for the development of organic production, adopted by the European Commission on March 25, 2021, in which the creation of that Day was announced so that organic production is better known. The general objective is to substantially promote the production and consumption of organic products in order to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the strategies ‘ From Farm to Fork‘ and on Biodiversity, such as the reduction of the use of fertilizers, pesticides and antimicrobials.
And as for the celebration of this day, entities such as IFOAM Organics Europe, one of the main promoters of Organic Food & Eco Living Iberia , have already been planning activities, events and promotion and dissemination campaigns with the aim that this September 23 fill out a full schedule of commemorations . At the moment, scheduled activities are already underway in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland and France. IFOAM wants there to be more : “Still don’t know what to organize? Is what you have in mind a good initiative?” To answer these questions and inspire planning activities, IFOAM organizes an exclusive sessionfor members under the title ‘ Let’s Talk Green: EU Organic Farming Day ‘. The event will take place on August 10 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (subject to prior registration), and the entity will collect all the organized initiatives and give them visibility through its website and social networks.
The organic farming sector needs the right tools to grow , as established in the action plan that presents 23 actions (hence on September 23) structured around three axes (boosting consumption, increasing production and further improve the sustainability of the sector) to ensure balanced growth in the sector. To boost consumption, the action plan includes measures such as information and communication on organic farming, encouraging the consumption of organic products and promoting greater use of organic food in public canteens through public procurement. Furthermore, to increase organic production, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)will remain a key instrument to support the conversion to organic farming.
In order to improve the sustainability of organic farming, the European Commission intends to allocate at least 30% of the budget for research and innovation in agriculture, forestry and rural areas to topics specific or relevant to the organic sector. Organic production has several important advantages. For example, organic farms have around 30% more biodiversity , organically raised animals enjoy higher welfare and receive fewer antibiotics, organic farmers are higher income and more resilient, and consumers know exactly what they buy thanks to the EU organic logo.
