New statistics from Danmarks Statistik shows retail sales of organic food and drink rose by 14%, an increase of 16 billion DKK in 2020.
Retail sales of organic food and drink are now estimated to 13% of the total sales of food in 2020. Comparing this to 2019 where the market share was around 12%. This means that Denmark continues to lead the way in organic consumption.
Retail sales of organic food:
Organic fruit and vegetables
Sales of organic fruit and vegetables increased by 21%, from 4.8 billion DKK in 2019, to 5.8 billion DKK in 2020. This corresponds to more than half of the total increase in organic food. Fruit and vegetables make up the largest organic category.
Plant-based drinks also continued to rise in 2020 by 39%, from 169 million DKK in 2019 to 234 million DKK in 2020. Sales of plant-based milk increased by 5%.
Coronavirus has accelerated organic sales
This growth in organic retail sales can be due to the fact that Danes have spent more money on sustainable food and drink options during the Coronavirus pandemic. Mainly due to the fact that travelling and eating out has not been an option. Retail chains have also significantly increased their organic product ranges.
