The UK-based Organic Trade Board has presented its inaugural Oak Award to the founder of organic feminine hygiene company Natracare, Susie Hewson.
The Oak Award is to be given annually by the OTB to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the UK organic sector. Winners are chosen by a panel made up of the OTB strategy committee and the trustees of the Organic Research Centre.
Hewson has been a pioneering force in organic since 1989 when she created Natracare. A lifelong environmentalist, her aim was to develop an alternative that respected women’s bodies and the planet. She campaigned since 2000 to have organic personal care standards for feminine hygiene, eventually succeeding with GOTS v5. All of the company’s menstrual, incontinence and baby care products use only organic and natural materials and they have a commitment to the highest ethical standards, plus a focus on organic principles and compostability.
Speaking at a special awards ceremony held at Yeo Valleys canteen, Adrian Blackshaw, chairman of the OTB said “I am delighted that the inaugural Oak Award has been presented to Susie. Throughout the selection process, her nomination stood out. Her international business Natracare, went plastic free in 1993, so far ahead of the curve that this issue wasn’t on many business agendas at the time. Susie is a very worthy recipient who came through a very competitive shortlist.”

The award Hewson received is made from 150-year-old oak, representing the lasting impact that winner has already had on the organic landscape. The hexagon-shaped award echo bee hive chambers – nature’s building blocks.
An award was also given posthumously to Peter Melchett, who died at the end of August. Two candle holders, made from oak, are awarded in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the organic and political landscape.
